BIOGRAPHY
American Master Valerie Scott Van Inwegen studied fine art at the University of Arizona and then at the New York Phoenix School of Design (now Known as Pratt-Phoenix). Training at the Phoenix was strictly classical academe, with teachers who were artists in their own right. Her extraordinary talent was acknowledged immediately in both institutions and rewarded with numerous scholarships and grants. Her education included exposure to Bob Peak, Dean Cornwell, Norman Rockwell and Jim Spanfeller. Her extensive knowledge of anatomy is accredited to her studies with Stephen Rogers Peck, the author of "Anatomy for the Artist". Valerie attributes her technical maturation to her good friend and mentor Charles Alton Pfahl (a protégée of John Koch and Robert Brackman) and her love affair with light to Vermeer, Carrivaggio and John Singer Sargent.

Valerie's superior training provided her with the ability to work in virtually every medium, and although she prefers oils and pastels, to this day she will challenge herself by working in graphite, watercolor and egg tempera. But while her skills and range can be said to be the result of her education, her exquisite style, choice of subject matter and extraordinary drive are more a result of her cherished family tier. Having grown up a member of a particularly devoted and loving family, Valerie achieved maturity with a heightened sense of nostalgia. As her elders passed on, Valerie painted with a vengeance the generations of antiques that were left to her - bridges to memories of a simpler time in a more elegant age. Viewed collectively, Valerie's work is truly a celebration of life and love.

Valerie, who is the mother of two lovely daughters who often model for her, lives with her husband (and sometimes frame maker) Ben Van Inwegen, in Thompson Ridge, New York. Part of her spacious studio, resplendent with family heirlooms and beloved north light, will soon be converted into a (by appointment) gallery.
